Envelope Budgeting for West African Households

Why envelopes work so well in West African households

Income in the region is often irregular: a salary, a side hustle, and remittances arriving on different days. Envelopes turn that mixed cash flow into a clear plan: as money comes in, it gets a job. You always know what is safe to spend.

The 6-step envelope method

  1. List your monthly net income in XOF (and any foreign currency you receive).
  2. List fixed expenses: rent, utilities, school fees, loan payments.
  3. List variable categories: groceries, transport, family support, leisure.
  4. Fund savings first — pay your goals before lifestyle.
  5. Assign every franc until income minus envelopes equals zero.
  6. Track and adjust weekly. Move money between envelopes instead of overspending.
